Item 01: Fame for Photoclub Member!

Current Photoclub in the Pub (Lewes) member, Ian Seccombe had a photograph featured on BBC Autumnwatch that aired on Friday 21st October.

About the photo:
Its a group of ‘cladonia fimbriata’ which is a type of lichen. The tubular fruiting body (popularly known as ‘pixie cups’) develops from minute leaf-like structures called squamules that grows on the soil among heather. The tubes are only a few millimetres high. The image was taken on Chailey Common on 21st September and used on the BBC Autumnwatch programme broadcast on Friday.

Lots more fungi and at least one other cladonia (the powderhorn) from Chailey Common on Ian’s flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianjmase/

Well done Ian, a really beautiful image.

Item 03: Landscape Photography Workshop

Special Courses: Landscape Photography Workshop
Saturday 29th October 2011 (6.30am-10.30am)

JUST 1 PLACE REMAINING!

Details:
Say goodbye to British Summertime with a landscape photography course run at the beautiful Cuckmere Valley.

I am running this landscape photography workshop for up to 6 people.

Date: Saturday 29th October 2011
Times: 6.30am – 10.30am
Meeting place: The Seven Sisters Country Park Carpark (Pay & Display)

The cost for this landscape course is just £20 per person!

It’s really easy to book, just select from menu and purchase your tickets online.

http://andrewnewson.co.uk/photography-tuition/landscape-photography

Because the course is run the day before the clocks change, we don’t have to start at a ridiculous time of morning. Sunrise is about 7.30am, but as there is some light before this, we will meet at 6.30am which will gives us enough time to walk in to the valley and find some good spots to set up and capture the sun rising over the sea and river.

What’s covered in the course?

  • Composition and Framing
  • Composition is a very important part of landscape photography and making sure all the right elements come together in one frame is key to a successful landscape image.
  • Using your camera’s light meter
  • Your camera will have a light meter built in to it and I will show you how best to use that to get the best results.
  • Correct Exposure
  • I’ll show you how to use Aperture Priority (in conjunction with exposure compensation) and also fully Manual modes to achieve perfect exposures.

My goal is that you come away with a much better understanding of your camera and landscape photography. Hopefully some great photos too!

I’ll be on hand at all times if you have questions, either relating to the above points or any others.

Item 04: Two New Digital Processing Workshops

NOT LONG TO BOOK NOW!

Introduction to Image Processing
Wednesday 9th November 2011 (7.00pm-9.30pm)

Details:
This is a small group course for those wishing to start processing their own digital images, but don’t know which way to turn.

Ideally your camera needs to have the ability to take photographs in Raw format to maximise the potential that these software options give you.

The course will be run in the evening from the Old Fire Station Café and will last for 2.5 hours.

With my laptop connected to a large TV screen I will demo the following software…

  • Picasa
  • Gimp
  • Raw Therapy
  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 10
  • Adobe Lightroom 3

This gives you chance to see all of the above software in action and decide which looks like the best option for you.

I always recommend Adobe Photoshop Elements to people starting out in image processing, because the software is inexpensive and the interface is very user-friendly. But I feel it’s important to look at some of the free options too, such as Picasa, Gimp and Raw Therapy. Also I will demo Adobe Lightrom 3 which is a more expensive option, but in my opinion one if the best.

Shooting in Raw format and processing the files yourself is one of the main things you can do to improve your photography. Forget that new lens or new camera, having a better understanding of Raw and digital processing will make your photographs much better, without doubt.

The course will be for up to 10 people and will cost £20 per person.

Wednesday 9th November (7pm-9.30pm)
The Old Fire Station Café, High Street, Crowborough, East Sussex
Price: £20 per person

Group Photoshop Elements Course
Wednesday 16th November 2011 (7.00pm-10.00pm)

Details:
Shooting in Raw format and developing your images yourself is probably the biggest change you can make to improve the quality and standard of your photographs.

I currently offer tuition in what I deem to be the most important and relevant processing platforms, Adobe Lightoom 3, Photoshop Elements 10 and Photoshop CS5.

Group Adobe Photoshop Elements 10
(Up to 6 people)

Please note: Ideally you will have your own laptop with Photoshop Elements 9 or 10.

Course Description:
The Elements course provides you with a comprehensive introduction to Raw processing and the most relevant features of Elements. The course covers workflow such as importing and cataloging your images and then developing and outputting for print and web.

It’s not possible to cover every feature of Elements but I concentrate on the following:

  • Import – Using the powerful Elements Organiser mode to import and organise your photos
  • Develop – Using the Elements Edit mode to process your photos. Including:
  • Exposure, white balance, local adjustments, shadow & highlights, black & white conversions, sharpening, noise reduction etc
  • Export – Saving for Print/Web/Screen

Item 05: Studio Courses Now Available

NOT LONG TO BOOK NOW!

Group Studio Lighting
Friday 11th November 2011 (2.00pm-6.00pm)

Details:

I am very pleased to announce we can now offer studio lighting courses in conjunction with Photoshoot Studio Hire in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

This is the group version and offers a very affordable introduction in to studio lighting.

Try your hand at portrait/fashion photography with a model whilst learning the basic skills of studio lighting.

What does the course cover?
Basic camera setup
Wireless connection to studio lights
Studio setup
Working with a model and props
Shooting with 1 and 2 light setups
Using a light meter
Achieving correct exposure
This course is for up to 10 people.

Photoshoot Studio Hire is one of the best studios I’ve used over the years, some are just dingy basements and it’s all a bit seedy, but not this one. Owner Paul Meyer has done a fantastic job in fitting out the studio with a bright airy feel. He is a friendly down-to-earth chap and is very helpful. The studio is well equipped with lighting, backdrops, an infinity cove, props, changing areas, kitchen, office etc etc. The studio is available to hire for everyone and this introduction to the studio environment will give you the skills and confidence to use the studio on your own in the future, should you want to.
